The ancient culture and culinary heart of South Korea

Dates: TBD Fall 2027

5000 years of culture and history, beautiful landscapes, and a vibrant culinary tradition rooted in its history and environment. Rice, vegetables, seafood, side dishes called barchan and fermented foods like kimchi, doenjang (soybean paste), and gochujang (red chili paste). Our journey will take us to the historical sites of Seoul, tasting the unique culinary culture at some of the oldest and famous places for particular dishes. To the coastof the sea of Japan and Seoraksan National Park. 

$2995 pp plus airfare

Itinerary:

Saturday :

After our long-haul flight we will arrive in Seoul, collecting our luggage we will transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city. After dropping our bags off at reception we will head to the Gyeongbokgung Palace meaning "Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven" built in 1395 it is the oldest and largest of the 5 grand palaces. After visiting the Palace we will head to Tosokchon Samgyetang for the famous Ginseng Chicken Soup. We will then visit the  Bukchon Hanok village and Changdeokgung palace before returning to check into our hotel and relax before an evening exploring the Insadong neighborhood stopping at the Jogyesa Temple and dinner at Imun Seolnongtang Seoul's oldest restaurant where we will enjoy ox bone soup and drink makgeolli the sweet-sour alcoholic beverage made from rice or wheat. Lunch and Dinner included. 

Sunday:

Today we start our day at Gwanghwamun House for Kimchi Jjigae and Gyeran Mari (rolled omelet) after we will head to the Seodaemun prison history museum. We will then hike the Inwangsan. We will then head to the Myeongdong Kyoja for dumplings and Knife-cut noodle soup. After we will visit the Myeongdong Cathedral a 19th century Gothic style Catholic Cathedral. We will then head back to our neigbothood to visit the Jongmyo shrine and dinner at Woo Lae Oak for Naengnyeon (cold handmade buckwheat noodles) and Bulgogi (marinated beef) Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner 

Monday:

Today we will head to Gwangjang market for breakfast where you can sample many different Korean street foods. We will then explore the Ihwa-dong neigborhood and the walk the Naksan fortress wall and the Cheonggyecheon stream. Lunch will be Bibimbob at Jeonju Yu Halmeoni. After lunch the remainder of the day is free to explore on your own. In the evening we will head to N Seoul tower for sunset and dinner at WooSung Galbi for Pork Galbi and pork rinds. Lunch and Dinner  

Tuesday:

Today we will take the high speed train to Gangneung on the sea of Japan. Here we will visit the Ojukheon, one of the oldest houses in Japan and home to a prominent Confucian scholar. Gangneung's culinary specialty is soft tofu and coffee and fresh seafood. Dinner

Wednesday:

Today we will take a bud to Sokcho were will then hire taxi to Seoraksan National Park. Here we will hike the Heundeulbawi trail. Along our hike we will see the Sinheungsa temple and the large bronze Buddha, the Gyejoam, a cave hermitage chiseled from rock for meditation finally arriving at the Heundeulbawi (the rocking rock) before we climb to the summit of Ulsanbawi 873m granite crag. After our hike the evening is your to enjoy. 

Thursday:

Today you can enjoy the morning around the National Park. In the afternoon we will head to Sokcho were we will take the winch ferry over to Abai island for the local specialty: Sundae a typer of sausage and their Ojingoe Sundae (stuffed squid)  and beers at Mont Beer. Meal on Abai island

Friday:

Today we will take a bus back to Seoul. After checking inot our hotel we will head to the Sigol Bapsang Itaewon for Bachan lunch. After lunch we will visit the Bongeunsa Temple and the Starfield Library. Lunch and Dinner 

Saturday:

Today is our last day in Korea. We will start our day in the early hours to the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market were you can buy the fish of your choice and have it grilled upstairs. after we will visit Fell and Cole ice cream and the Namdaemun market before a free afternoon. In the evening we will head to 2 Makgeolli breweries before our final dinner at one of Anthony Bourdains favorite BBQ restaurants.  Dinner and 1 Makgeolli at each brewery

Sunday:

Depart for home.
